HOW I TAMED THE INNER BEAST

My personal story as to why I started weight training is a short but powerful story.

Through my teenage years I developed an inner rage due largely to things that were occurring in my personal life. As a young male expressing this was very difficult for me the only way was through anger or rage which never was quite appropriate. The difficulty in expressing myself effectively lead to high levels of anxiety, constant agitation and disconnection.

THEN ENTERED WEIGHT TRAINING AND A PASSION FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS

I got my first home gym at the age of 15 and this is where things started to change for me. I began channeling the extra energy into more positive things and the inner beast was slowly  tamed.

Over the course of the last 11 years strength training and movement in general has become an integral part of my day to day existence. It allows me to properly manage my stress, utilise extra energy and maintain my high levels of cognitive function.

We are all aware of how strength training can positively impact our physical health but the mental benefits are never focused on as heavily.

Even though meditation and yoga are very essential in achieving balance in the mind, body and soul, through the more non-traditional methods such as strength training, you also achieve optimal levels of mental health. Both meditation and strength training answer the need to have down time along with the need to quiet down and look within.

This is especially important because today people absorb more information in one day than a person in the 1400’s absorbed in an entire lifetime. Weight training today helps you stay focused, strong and in control!

Technology, including mobile phones, faxes and computers, along with the mentality of moving quicker and constantly doing things, tends to lead to people forgetting that this inward focus that weight training is necessary and vital to mental health.

We need to view movement as an affirmation of living and a function to maintain health and wellness. We need to change the language we speak to ourselves from “I have to” to “I get to!”

We don’t have to do anything, we have the luxury of choice! Every day we get to choose to  give ourselves the greatest reward in life, the gift of strength training!

WHY SHOULD YOU STRENGTH TRAIN?

There are so many benefits behind doing regular strength work, too many to list. Today I thought I would list the obese that I think will benefit you the most.

1. You’ll Feel Better: Not only will you find yourself with more energy and confidence, less stress and anxiety, and a better overall mood, but you’ll actually begin to think better resistance training has been proven to help increase cognitive function

2. Makes You Healthier: If you’re looking for a workout in which you get the biggest bang for your buck, strength training is it. Strength training increases bone density, builds a stronger heart, reduces your resting blood pressure, improves blood flow, halts muscle loss, helps control blood sugar, improves cholesterol levels, and improves your balance and coordination

3. Look Good Naked: Strength training helps you lose body fat in a few different ways.  First, it helps you retain the muscle you have while eating a calorie deficit, Second, strength training has a much greater level of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption than aerobic exercise and lastly strength training can help increase your metabolism by speeding up your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR).  This is because it takes your body more calories to maintain muscle than it does to maintain fat.
